Sproat Lake Water Recreation

Sproat Lake water recreation

We are great enthusiasts of the water adventures that can be enjoyed and discovered on Sproat Lake, from scuba diving to canoeing or houseboat rentals and stand-up paddleboarding there's always something to do here. We sponsored the first annual Port Alberni paddleboard race this year, and will continue to support this great local event in the years to come. Sproat Lake water recreation offers a majestic back-drop of shimmering fresh waters, douglas fir forests, and natural wildlife that can be spotted at any hour of the day.

If you're looking for a pristine houseboat vacation that can accommodate groups of 15, or seeking to rent a ski boat for some wakeboarding in the sun, check out Fish and Duck Houseboats. For those seeking windsurfing, canoe and kayaking options there are plenty of options available through vacation rental packages.

Another popular pastime here is the Sproat Lake Canoe Club, which caters to both recreational and competitive paddlers throughout the year. Row through the morning mist with the sun peeking up over the hillsides, as you paddle with your crew for a blissful early morning work-out!

Stand-Up Paddleboarding: Rentals & Sales

Stand-up paddleboarding

One of the most popular lake activities is stand-up paddleboarding, where you can sail calmly through the waters with nothing more than a paddle to guide you on your journey. Stand-up paddleboarding originated in Hawaii as an extension to surfing, and is now widely considered to be one of the most popular outdoor activities for first-time participants. With a quick learning curve, people of all ages and abilities can master the standing paddle and soon be on their way.

During the summer here, locals will be able to rent boards from Three Dog Snack & Surf, located on the Pacific Rim Highway just past McCoy lake Road. Here you can rent paddleboards for yourself, as a couple, and afterwards you can cool off with some Hawaiian shaved ice. Take in the sunrise on a shore side paddle to spot the loons, wildlife and waterfowl or enjoy a sunset glide across the waters and watch as colours light up the sky.

Our Vancouver Island Fishing And Other Sproat Lake Adventures

Vancouver Island fishing

Vancouver Island fishing is world class and Sproat Lake has some of the best rainbow trout angling in the area, especially in the months of June through to September. The boat launch on the north shore of the lake is a popular starting place. Saltwater anglers can enjoy the close proximity to Alberni Inlet and Barkley Sound for chinook, coho and sockeye salmon.

While you're out on the water you may spot a flying water tanker as well. The Martin Mars water bombers use the lake to fill up for assisting in extinguishing forest fires. Watch them scoop up to 27 tons of water from the lake surface. These planes are moored at the Coulson Flying tankers visitor centre on Cherry Creek Road, open from July to August.
